CBD vs HRT – A Natural Alternative?

Do you prefer a natural solution to managing the menopause? Or conventional Medicine such as HRT? Or both? We live in a world where having the power to choose our treatment is our right. For those of us not able to take HRT or for those who simply prefer a natural solution, it can send us on a wild goose chase to find the right alternative.

Feminapause™ was founded in response to personal experience of not being able to take HRT. The birth of the company signified that other women in a similar position have an option readily available to them without the hardship and emotional turmoil of years of trial and error.

Let’s take a look at both HRT and CBD in comparison for the menopause:

CBD VS HRT

HRT works by replacing hormones that reduce during the menopause which targets menopause symptoms such as hot sweats & mood. Different types of HRT consist of tablets, skin patches, vaginal gels & creams etc.

The NHS states that HRT can increase the risk of breast cancer and may cause some side-effects such as headaches, indigestion, nausea and stomach pain. A major reason we see women looking for alternatives is the fact that women with a history of breast and ovarian cancer for example are not able to take HRT. If you have a history of high blood pressure, blood clots & liver disease or are pregnant then HRT is not recommended (Source: nhs.uk).

CBD isn’t a direct replacement for HRT during menopause as they are very different in the way they work. HRT replaces hormones and CBD interacts with receptors in the body (does not contain hormones). Symptoms associated with the menopause have been researched in relation to CBD and have shown promising results for temperature regulationsleepmooddepressionbrain fogpain & memory.

CBD is generally well tolerated and carries a low risk of side-effects. For some however, it can cause diarrhoea, fatigue and drowsiness. The biggest caution with CBD is that it can interact with certain medications such as anti-depressants so it’s important to consult with your GP if you are on medication and are considering a CBD-based supplement.

Even though CBD is a natural supplement classified as a food supplement, CBD is being heavily studied. The National Library of Medicine has over 20,500 articles when searching for CBD. These pieces of research are shedding light on this once “new” natural remedy and turning it into something better understood.

Be aware: Not all CBD is Actually CBD

Did you know that not all CBD supplements are the same? CBD, unlike HRT, is unregulated due to the nature of herbal remedies. A study in 2017 found that over 80% of CBD supplements tested actually didn’t contain the amount of CBD they listed on their packaging.  This is worrisome because we purchase products trusting that the ingredients listed are accurate! This is why from the beginning, Feminapause put a high emphasis on the manufacturing process: producing locally, 3rd party lab testing, manufacturing with a pharmaceutical company and using high quality full spectrum CBD oil.

It’s Your Personal Journey

Directly comparing CBD with HRT is difficult as they are very different solutions altogether. CBD is natural and has shown promising therapeutic effects in numerous studies relating to various symptoms linked to the menopause, whilst HRT replaces hormones and also targets menopause symptoms.

Having various options available is of great importance. Every woman’s journey through the menopause is unique  – what works for one woman may not work for another.
